Guest Speaker: Talia Shiff, Coveted Market

Talia Shiff Founder of Coveted Market and Humber College Alumni joined our Innovative Fashion Promotions class to share insight into her entrepreneurial path.  After gaining experience at TJX Canada/Winners Merchants International L.P., Holt Renfrew, Aritzia, and Fairweather, Talia wanted to venture out on her own.  With a marketing perspective, Talia introduced us to her clean beauty e-commerce business covetedmarket.com.  She provided a thorough behind-the-scenes look including details on how she developed her corporate identity and her brand building visuals and photography.  Talia explained Coveted Market’s customer friendly tools to support a transition to clean beauty products and reviewed how the business employs other marketing tactics, building an online customer base, and her process to source the assortment offering of local and sustainable oriented products. Students enjoyed hearing about the background on her stunning Instagram content and even some of her favourite “hero” products.

The Poster Factory Exhibit Event

The Poster Factory Exhibit event was a curated exhibit to select the creative for the upcoming Fashion Arts Walk It Out fashion event, Euphoria to be held in Spring 2016.

In partnership with other Professors in the program, students from my Advanced Creative Suite class designed promotional posters and marketing collateral for a class assignment. These posters were displayed and judged in the curated exhibit held in the Learning Resource Commons (LRC).  Making me particularly proud, a poster designed by a student in my section was the “People’s Choice Winner” at the exhibit.

A New Dawn was the theme for the graduating Fashion Arts student fashion event showcasing many beautiful pieces from collections of Canadian designers.  The students hosted the evening event at the Palais Royale.  The show featured many of the same designers that showed their collections at World Master Card Fashion Week in Toronto such as Lucian Matis, Stephan Caras and Narces.  This marks the completion of the students’ program and beginning of their next steps in the industry.

It’s a new dawn.  It’s a new day.  It’s a new life. And I’m feeling good.

Second Annual Fashion Comes Home Alumni Event

The second annual Fashion Comes Home Alumni Event was held in the L Space Gallery at Humber’s Lakeshore campus. The event was hosted by current students and gave all in attendance the opportunity to re-connect with former Fashion Humber Alumni, meet new Fashion Grads and to network with Industry guests.

This year a vintage exhibit “100 years of Fashion – Everything Old is New Again” accompanied the event. The exhibit featured fashions and accessories from the 1900s on and all items on display were on loan to the college by a private collector.

Fully curated and installed by current students, the exhibit was enhanced by current work from the Fashion Arts Diploma program students, the Fashion Management Degree program students and Fashion Management and Promotions Postgraduate Certificate program students.

Fashion Humber Trip: Hermès Festival des Métiers

Despite the grey weather, Hermès’ colourful silk scarves captured our attention. Toronto’s Design Exchange hosted Hermès’ Festival Des Métiers where visitors saw a glimpse of the workmanship that goes into crafting many of the Maison’s luxury goods. The most captivating part of the exhibit for me was watching the craftsmen from the Hermès atelier in France, demonstrating the silk screening process used to colour the luxurious silk scarves. The close up look at the making of these iconic objects was fascinating and presented a true art form.

I organized a field trip for all Humber Fashion students across the Fashion Arts Diploma program, the Fashion Management Degree program and the Fashion Management and Promotions Postgraduate Certificate program to visit the exhibit. Students were formally introduced to the exhibit by staff in waves to accommodate the 200+ students in attendance.

Humber’s Refresh: A Social Media Conference 2013

My Fashion Management Postgraduate students talk about the social media strategy employed by one of Canada’s leading fashion retailers with Patrick Dickinson Senior Vice President, Core Marketing & Brand Strategy, Hudson’s Bay Company

I’m looking forward to this event becoming an annual happening at Humber!  Social media is always in a state of flux so hearing different ways it is being leveraged by the industry, always opens my eyes to new possibilities.  The postgraduate students also had a lot of takeaways from the ‘thought leaders’ in social media marketing and management.  The best practices in the industry and social media business skills were highlighted.

Walk It Out 2013: Midnight Empire Fashion Event & Launch of INFUSE Magazine

On a very rainy night in April, we celebrated the student fashion show along with the launch of the student magazine, INFUSE.  I’m recognizing more and more the time and effort put in by the Program Coordinators and Professors, Pauline Ashworth, Antonietta Perretta, and Eugenia Lista-Zaharchuk to support the students in their achievements in these endeavours.  This was also a special night as I was able to reconnect with many of my former students who will be graduating from Humber this spring.

A class of graduating Fashion Arts students put on a fashion show each year.  It was a great experience to attend the show and see the culmination of all of the students’ hard work.  How cool was it to see students in my classes put on the show, volunteer for the event and even walk in the show modelling the fashions?!  Very impressed with their dedication in organizing such a high calibre industry-quality event.
